Maidens golf team wins invitational tournament
RONAN – The Ronan Maidens varsity golf team had plenty to contend with during the Ronan Invitational Golf Tournament at the Mission Mountain Golf Course on Thursday, including roasting heat and a competitive field, but they won the nine-team stroke play event with a combined top score of 400.
Macao Jackson was the top finisher for the Maidens, notching a 22-over-par 94 to finish sixth overall, while teammate Kylee Niemeyer finished eighth by posting a score of 100.
For the Polson Lady Pirates, Ellie Thiel shot an overall first place 10-over-par 82 and finished one shot behind the Maidens in second place in the team standings with a score of 401.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, golfers played in teams comprised of four-to-five players of the same school group, as opposed to the normally mixed school groupings, determined by each individual player’s state ranking.
On the boy’s side of the scorecard, the Ronan Chiefs placed third in the standings with a team- combined total of 353 points, followed by Polson with 354 points.
Colter Cornwell led the Chiefs by finishing sixth with a 13-over-par 85. Polson Pirates Torrin Ellis and Christian Lund each carded an 87 to finish tied for seventh place.
“We were pleased with how we performed at the tournament,” said Ronan Golf head coach Frank Ciez. “Both boys and girls teams’ were pleased that they shot better than last year.”
After the Labor Day break, both the Polson and Ronan golf squads return to competition at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, during the Corvallis Invite held on the University of Montana golf course in Missoula.
