POLSON — The homecoming of 2020 will be one to remember for the Polson Pirates and Lady Pirates.

After many of the traditional homecoming activities had already been sidelined due to the coronavirus pandemic, the football, volleyball and girls’ soccer homecoming games where all canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

Instead of letting the pandemic spoil their fun, the faculty and students salvaged their annual celebration with a few creative twists.

Traditional themed dress-up days and hall decorating contest remained intact but daily pep rallies turned into virtual events with a spirited homecoming video being shown to all the classes each day.

On Tuesday, the boys’ homecoming soccer matchup with the Bigfork Vikings ended with the Vikings slipping past the Pirates with a 4-3 victory.

Keith Erickson led the Pirates with two goals, while Kaden Nelson added a goal and an assist.

On Thursday evening, in lieu of canceling volleyball, a scrimmage game was played with the team, parents and coaches.

After a last-minute COVID-19 cancellation by the Stevensville Yellowjackets, the Pirates salvaged their Friday night homecoming football game by scheduling a fill in game with the Class B Bigfork Vikings who were also searching for a game to play due to a COVID-19 cancellation by the Anaconda Copperheads.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Vikings prevailed in the pandemic makeup game 54-40.

Pirate quarterback Jarrett Wilson had 41 completions for 438 yards and six touchdowns. Wilson also carried the ball ten times for 74 yards.

Receiving for the Pirates, Colton Graham and Boston Goode each found the end zone twice, while Xavier Fisher and Robert Perez each had a touchdown. Graham led all Pirate receivers with 160 yards on 14 catches.

During halftime of the football game, the Polson homecoming court was introduced, including Megan Rost, Jony Perez, Michael Smith, Taylor Collinge, Berkley Ellis, Austin Luper, Meggie Todd and Boston Goode. Berkley Ellis and Boston Goode were crowned homecoming queen and king.
