Maidens claim second place at Western A divisionals, head to state

BUTTE — The Ronan Maidens collected a Western A divisional girls’ basketball tournament second-place trophy and a bracket slot in the upcoming State Class A tournament this past weekend.
Playing in the opening round in the Western A Divisional tournament held at the Butte Central Maroon Center on Thursday, the Maidens had no trouble defeating the host Butte Central Lady Maroons 61-43.
Scoring a game-high 17 points, Jaylea Lunceford led the Maidens followed by LaReina Cordova with 11 points.
Friday’s evening semifinal action saw the Maidens wallop the Hamilton Lady Broncs 54-32.
Maiden Danielle Coffman led all shooters with a game-high 13 points on the night, while Jaeleigh Gatch chipped in 11.
In the championship game on Saturday night, the undefeated Columbia Fall Wildkats held off the Maidens 59-54.
Lunceford and Areanna Burke teamed up for 22 of the Maidens’ total points, scoring 11 apiece. Also for the Maidens, Olivia Heiner scored 10 points on the night.
The state tournament begins on Wednesday in Great Falls at the Four Seasons Arena. The 12-8 Maidens are scheduled to challenge, in the first round, the 13-4 Hardin Lady Bulldogs.
