RONAN — Human remains were found at the base of the Mission Mountains in an area southeast of Ronan on the morning of Tuesday, March 30.

Lake County Sheriff Don Bell said a report came in to Lake County 911 that a person who was not identified to the public had found what appeared to be human remains. Bell said deputies responded to the call and located a decomposed human body 75 yards east of the irrigation canal, which parallels the mountains. “Detectives processed the scene and secured the body for transport to the state crime lab,” Bell said.

During an investigation, officers reported their preliminary findings based on known facts and believe the body is that of 74-year-old Allen Ray who was reported missing on Aug. 1, 2020. The body was found near the Schwartz Lake area, which is where Ray was last seen walking with his dog. “He was separated from friends he was walking with,” Bell said.

After Ray went missing, Lake County Search and Rescue conducted a search of the area with ground personnel, dogs and air support. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation that corresponded with the search efforts and found nothing at the time.

The body was sent to the state crime lab to be identified. “Investigation continues to confirm the identity of the remains and the cause and manner of death,” Bell said. “Foul play is not suspected at this time, and we will provide updates on the case when we have more information.”
