You’ve heard about matches made in heaven and labors of love.

Well, that’s what Neal and Karen Lewing have meant for countless years to the Port Polson Players Theatre.

And with the 38th season now under way at the historic John Dowdall Theatre overlooking Flathead Lake at the base of the “old nine” on the Polson Bay Golf Course, the duo who has been a driving force behind community theater will tell their story at the Ronan Polson of Chamber luncheon at the Ronan Golf Course May 2.

Paired with the historic theater for 31 years, the Lewings not only write, direct and participate in a busy summer calendar, but they also give youngsters their first taste of performing with myriad summer camps and performing opportunities.

“We believe in our kids,” Neal said. “We get attached to them. We care about them. We want them to succeed. To do that, they need the life skills they get from the performing arts.

“Theater improves communication skills, gives an opportunity to express oneself and helps develop critical thinking. It encourages cooperation with others in achieving a collective goal and enhances self-esteem, poise and self-confidence, all to the appreciation of an enthusiastic audience and community.”

Married some 34 years, the Lewings are a testament to the tenacity required not only to run a nonprofit but to celebrate live theater by sharing performers with their neighbors in a rural setting.

The monthly luncheon is open to the public, and lunch is available for $8.
