ARLEE — Arlee was a busy town on the Fourth of July, beginning with the Firemen’s Pancake Breakfast, the parade at noon, the first grand entry at the 115th Annual Arlee Celebration at 2 p.m., the 3-on-3 basketball tournament and the 31st Annual Arlee Fourth of July open rodeo.

The rodeo began at 2 p.m., and it was hot, about 87 degrees Fahrenheit, which seemed cool for the competitors from Arizona and Texas. The chickens for the chicken scramble at the end of the show drooped in their cage. Everyone had a water bottle or a paper cup full of something cool.

Three tarps flapped in the wind over the bleachers, providing some shade for a few lucky viewers. Regardless of the heat, the rodeo drew a big crowd, including a group of photographers from a photography school.

In the distance, the sounds of drumming and singing could be heard from the Arlee Celebration. Also on the wind were whiffs of frybread, cheesburgers and chinese noodles.

The Fourth of July weekend is known as “cowboy Christmas” with many rodeos all over the country. In Montana, the Red Lodge Rodeo, the Livingston rodeo and right across the state line, the Cody, Wyo., rodeo, are within easy commuting distance.

Many rodeo contestants hit as many shows as they can, competing in a rodeo, loading their horses back in the trailer and hitting the highway to reach another contest. The idea being to compete in as many rodeos and win as much money as possible, but also many hometowners competed..
