Think about some of the significant things which have happened around the world over the past 20 or 30 years; the destruction of the Berlin Wall; the break-up of the Soviet Union; 9/11; Katrina; the wars in the Middle East, just to name a few.
Some of us remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima; the Invasion at Normandy; thrilling news when America sent citizens into space and put men on the moon. However, nothing that has taken place in the past hundred years has influenced or affected everybody around our world.
Recall some of the strategic happenings in world history, the Civil War; the discovery of America; the invention of the printing press; the signing of the Magna Charta; the fall of the Roman Empire. All of these major events have had extraordinary historical significance. But none of them has had the kind of monumental, worldwide influence and affect that the resurrection of Jesus Christ has had for more than 2,000 years.
The clear teaching of the Bible declares that God came to our planet as a human baby; that his purpose in coming was to pay the penalty of death for the sins of all mankind (John 1:1-29; Romans 6:23). The Bible also makes it abundantly clear that if Jesus had not conquered death’s binding grip and exited that rocky tomb, he nor anyone else would ever achieve victory over death (1 Corinthians 15:12-19).
We desperately need a clear understanding of the implications of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our eternal destiny depends on it. Consider what the writer says in Acts 17:30-31, “(God) commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him; for He has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead” (NLT).
Our personal affirmation of Jesus Christ and his resurrection will determine his response to us at the day of judgment and our eternal destiny.
