CHARLO — When emergency personnel responded to the report of a car wreck about 5 p.m. on April 17, they found a silver Pontiac Vibe with its front end smashed against a tree. The car and tree were tucked in next to a pond along U.S. Highway 93 near the Charlo turn-off.
No one was in or around the vehicle, although the driver’s side airbag had deployed and had a little bit of blood on it.
First responders checked the pond and a nearby hillside and field to see if an injured driver or passenger might have wandered away.
Faint tire marks led down the hill from Highway 93 to the tree. Officers surmised the vehicle was headed north when it veered across the highway and off the opposite side of the road.
They also believe the wreck may have happened much earlier than when it was reported.
The vehicle is registered to Crystal McDougal.
