POLSON — Battling weather and more injuries the Mission Valley Mariners lit a fire and picked up some much needed conference wins, bringing them to 5-3 in conference play.

Things started out with a bang on Monday while playing a pair against the Missoula Mavs, went into a split on Thursday in Florence, and ended with a split on Sunday in Eureka against the Kootenai Valley Rangers.

With heated emotion on Monday between the two clubs, the M’s sent Missoula’s Mavericks home packing after pulling out a couple of wins from under the Mav’s feet at home. Game one pitted Derek Peel on the hill against hot Mav bats. Though the Mavericks tinked 10 hits off of Peel, Mariners answered back with determination, clubbing 15 hits of their own. Leading the pack were Ryan Pablo and Bradley Pichler with a combined seven hits and nine RBIs. Pablo went 4-5 picking up three RBIs while Pichler was 3-4 knocking in six of the M’s runs. Peel held fast and picked up the 16-6 win on the mound striking out two and walking three.

In game two on Monday, the Mariners struggled to get much done from the plate through the first five innings and errors plagued the defense but an explosive sixth saw five Mariners cross home bringing the M’s to the 6-4 win. Pichler grabbed the win for the Mariners throwing six innings, striking out six and allowing no earned runs. Brenen Abromeit closed it out on the mound in the seventh, picking up the save. Jacob Harrod proved perfect at the plate going 3-3 with two RBIs.

Thursday the Mariners traveled to Florence to take on old foes, Bitterroot Bucs, coming away with a split. After falling behind and trailing the Bucs in the first six innings of play and a rain delay, the Mariners refused to go away quietly, putting up five runs in the top of the seventh inning, giving them just enough to snag the 7-6 win. Bransen Krebs picked up his first season win on the mound allowing no walks and striking out two. Alex Killian led from the plate going 3-4 while TJ Olson did his job brining in three Mariner runs.

In the nightcap the Mariners struggled to muster up hits leaving a tough spot for Zeke Webster-Yaqui on the mound. Though Webster-Yaqui strong-armed nine strikeouts, the Mariners ultimately fell 3-8 to the Bucs. Killian, Olson, and Pichler logged the three hits for the M’s all landing on second base with doubles. Pichler chipped in two RBIs.

In Eureka on Sunday the Mariners picked up a conference win and a non-league loss against the Kootenai Valley Rangers. While the rain tumbled down, a determined M’s club took the diamond by storm commanding the 15-3 win. Pichler gained the win on the bump striking out six while allowing just one Ranger to reach base with a walk. Bats were hot in the Mariners hands with Cole Snyder, Killian, and Olson all hitting 3-4 and Webster-Yaqui going 4-5 with three RBIs. Killian and Olson added six RBIs between them with three apiece. Trevor Para showed patience at the plate, reaching base on balls three times resulting in extra runs scored for the Mariners.

In game two, a non-conference contest, the Mariners fell short falling to the Rangers 4-5. Derek Peel led at the plate going 2-2. Jacob Harrod recorded the loss from the hill but not without striking out six Rangers.

The Mariners will host their annual Firecracker Tournament July 3-6 at O’Malley Park in Polson. In addition to the tournament which will bracket 11 teams including both A and B Mariner clubs, the Mariners will also be hosting a pig roast dinner fundraiser being served at the field July 4.
