KALISPELL – The Polson 12U team burned through opponents their 2014 season with a mission to grab a spot at the coveted Regional Tournament.

Mission accomplished.

After winning four tournaments, including their own hosted invitational tourney, the team snagged a State title with five wins and only one loss overall in Whitefish July 17-20, qualifying them to participate at the Cal Ripken Majors tournament hosted in Kalispell this last weekend. The Polson team competed against teams from Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Canada.

After losing their first game to Port Angeles, a team from Washington that ultimately won the tournament, the 12U team came back to win their next two contests against Havre 8-1 and a “comeback thriller” against Alberta 7-6. Their final game was a loss to Caldwell, Idaho.

Coach Pete Plant is proud of the boys and their accomplishments and said the boys “worked hard,” practicing every week.

A highlight of the tournament for the team was a visit from the Mission Valley Mariners, who according to Plant, watched the final game from center field.

“After the final game, the Mission Valley Mariners came to the dugout and congratulated the boys on a great season,” Plant said. “This was much appreciated.”

Though the team did not win a Regional title, placing third in pool play with a 2-2 record, the players take with them great experiences and wonderful memories.
