PABLO — A 16-point first-half deficit proved too big of a mountain for the Bison to climb in a 104-86 loss to the Tetons Sunday at the Joe McDonald Health and Fitness Complex.
After falling behind 44-28 to Williston State College in the first half – a half marred with turnovers and missed shots – the Bison shook off the cobwebs of a nearly three-week layoff and looked liked a different team in the second half. Behind the hot shooting of Pius Takes Horse, the Bison took a 62-61 lead with about 10 minutes to play, but used all their energy in the comeback and from there the Tetons ran away with the victory.
“It’s been almost two weeks since we played. We had some rust we had to get off,” Salish Kootenai College coach Zach Conko-Camel said. “We put together a couple of big runs in the second half I like to see that.”
The Bison had a hard time holding onto the ball in the first half, finishing with 20 turnovers in the half. The Bison also abandoned their inside game and just relied on the outside shot. Out of the Bison’s 28 points in the first half, 24 of them came from behind the 3-point arc. After knocking down three of their first four 3-pointers, the Bison went cold from outside, missing their next seven shots from downtown. The Tetons used the Bison’s cold shooting to build a......

Lady Bison fall to Lady Tetons

Lady Bison center Carla McLean gets blocked as she goes up for a shot against the Tetons late in the second half in a 96-72 loss at the Joe McDonald Health and Fiitness Complex Sunday.

PABLO — The Salish Kootenai College Lady Bison were done in by the long-range shot in a 96-72 loss to Williston State College.
The Lady Tetons hit 11 3-pointers in the 24-point victory at the Joe McDonald Health and Fitness Complex Sunday.
“Williston hit a lot of threes. They were hitting the outside shot and we weren’t. You can’t trade them two points for three points and expect to win,” SKC coach Juan Perez said.
“Defensively, we weren’t finding the open shooter on the weak side. We were focusing too much on what was happening in front of us and weren’t paying attention to what was happening behind us,” Perez said. “You score 70-plus points you expect to win, but defensively we just weren’t doing the things we need to be doing to win,” he said.
Despite the lapses in defense, Perez isn’t worried. He knows it is a young season and that the Lady Bison have plenty of time to prepare for their defense of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium Championship. The Lady Bison will have two weeks to .....

Fisher, Brown win Turkey Trot
By Aaric Bryan
Valley Journal
POLSON — Runners and walkers who wanted to get some exercise before devouring some turkey and pumpkin pie showed up for Polson Running’s Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.
Even though a layer of fluffy white fog covered Polson, the race started at 9:30 a.m. at the Century 21 Big Sky Real Estate office on Anchor Way. Racers walked and ran through the mist to Haack Road, turned around and retraced their steps.
With proceeds from the Turkey Trot and other races, Tyana Smith from Polson Running said the organization would present a $500 check to the Loaves and Fish Food Pantry next week.
The next race is the Jingle Bell Jog “Lace Up for Layne” scheduled for Jan. 9, 2010. Check the polsonrunning.com website for more information on the race next week.

Bachmeier prepares to lead Scarlets to state
Aaric Bryan/Valley Journal
Returning senior Chelsea Allaire leads a group through a drill during Arlee practice last week.
By Aaric Bryan
Valley Journal
The Arlee Scarlets don’t have too much experience amongst the players, but their new coach more than makes up for it.
Richard Bachmeier has come out of the retirement and decided to hang the whistle around his neck one more time. Bachmeier started his coaching career in 1968 and retired in 1993. During his span, Bachmeier captured the state championship in 1979 and enough wins to be inducted in the Montana Coaching Hall of Fame.
Bachmeier knows little about last year’s five-win team and is just focusing on this season. After the first couple of practices, he had no idea of what the starting lineup would be when they open the season in their new gym against Two Eagle River Dec. 8, but this is a good thing for Bachmeier. He said that he has 13 players that he can insert in the starting lineup.
“Eventually, it’s going to be depth. I think we’ll be pretty deep. I don’t think we’ll be the fastest team or the tallest team, but we’ll be pretty deep,” Bachmeier answered, when asked what his team strength will be.
Chelsea Allaire, one of the four seniors on the team, is one of the 13 players that is fighting for a starting position. Allaire started last year and Bachmeier said should be a team leader this season.
“She (Allaire) is a good rebounder and has a positive attitude. She’s a decent shot and gives us an inside presence,” Bachmeier said.
Melissa Ivanoff also saw a lot of playing time last season and should be on the court again for a lot of the season. Bachmeier said the junior has good speed, is a decent shot and is always aggressive on defense.
Jenna Pablo and Shaylene Haynes got a lot of minutes last season and will be instrumental in......

Cole Rice to lead youthful Arlee squad
Aaric Bryan/Valley Journal
Warrior Cole Rice pins an opponent at the state championship last year. He finished second then and plans on becoming the state champion this year.
By Aaric Bryan
Valley Journal
ARLEE — The Warriors will have to overcome youth and inexperience if they want to improve on last year’s second-place finished at divisionals.
The Warriors have very few wrestlers returning from last year’s team, which finished second at the Western B-C Divisional Tournament and went on to finish 10th at the state tournament. In his 12th year as Arlee coach, Ken Hill should take some assurance that one his returning wrestlers is Cole Rice.
The 140-pound junior went 40-4 last season, captured the divisional championship and finished second in the state. In his two-year career at Arlee, Rice has an 83-13 record. Rice heads into the season with one goal: winning the state championship.
“Cole is motivated to win a state championship and his work ethic is impeccable. He is a team leader and leads by example,” Hill said.
Three other Warriors that joined Rice at Billings will be back for Arlee this season.
In his freshman year, Logan Lefler went 28-16 in the 119-pound class and finished third at the divisional tournament. Lefler, who will wrestle in the 125-pound class this season, had a busy offseason and is looking to be wrestling for hardware at the state championship.
“Logan, like Cole, knows what it takes to be a great wrestler. He works hard, has wrestled in some big tournaments since last season and has been successful. He will be.......
