Fall open burning ended Nov. 30

The last official day of the fall 2009 open burning season was Monday, Nov. 30, but the air quality was bad enough in the valley that no burning was permitted.
The open burning season runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30 of each year. Individuals in Montana and those who specifically live on the Flathead Reservation could conduct debris burn activities through Nov. 30 without a permit, as long as local restrictions did not apply.
Debris burning will not be allowed during the upcoming winter months of December, January and February. The spring open burn season will start on March 1, 2010, and run through April 30. From May 1 through Sept. 30 burning is allowed by permit only, but that may be limited due to fire danger.
Air quality recommendations are taken from the Montana/Idaho Airshed Group web site at www.smokemu.org. For areas within the Flathead Reservation, open or restricted smoke dispersal conditions are announced with references to Airshed 2 (which includes Lake, Sanders and Flathead Counties) and Airshed 3 (which includes a portion of Missoula County).
For more local information on restrictions or air quality, contact Marcella Mahseelah at the CSKT’s Division of Fire office at 676-2550 or toll free at 1-800-225-6779.
