POLSON — Christmas lights twinkled and glittered on storefronts in downtown Polson on Friday, Dec. 4., beckoning customers and browsers to come on in and see what was going on at the Polson Art Walk.
A shopper who walked into almost any business from 5 to 7 p.m. would have found photographers, flautists, basket makers, pianists, painters, singers, bagpipers, doll makers, beaders, guitarists, stained glass artists and weavers and even a pizza dough tosser.
Sponsored by the Polson Business Community, the Polson Art Walk kicked off the Christmas season in downtown Polson with artists, musicians and.........

Horses cross Crow Dam halfway to their winter pasture. The Cheff family moved about 120 horses and mules to their winter home from the Cheff Guest Ranch at the end of Eagle Pass Trail.

Continuing a time-honored tradition, the Cheff family moved 85 horses, 35 mules, and one lone donkey from the Cheff Guest Ranch to the winter pasture on Flathead River last Thursday morning.
The 120-head horse/mule drive stopped traffic on U.S. Highway 93 and on several country roads until finally arriving at the winter pasture three and a half hours later. The operation was manned by four cowboys on horseback and several other vehicles. The horses will reside in the winter pasture until early May, when the family will move them back to the ranch.
“Just try and pay attention,” Edward “Mick” Cheff advised.
He noted that the horse drive is...........

H1N1 vaccinations now available for all county residents
By Melea Burke

POLSON — The restrictions have been lifted, and H1N1 flu vaccinations are now available to all Lake County and Flathead Reservation residents, according to Teri Boettcher, public information officer with Lake County Public Health.
Until this week, due to limited supply of the vaccine, the shots were only available to the higher-risk groups specified by the Center for Disease Control — including pregnant women, people who care for infants, people under 24 years of age and adults with compromised immune systems. On Friday, Lake County Public Health Director Emily Colomeda said state health officials would reassess distribution of the vaccine, since most counties had enough to meet demand, but some didn’t.
“They’re looking at reallocating (vaccine) to those counties,” she said.
H1N1 vaccinations are available at.......

ST. IGNATIUS — An early-morning fire on Dec. 3 damaged a home outside of St. Ignatius, and the cause has yet to be determined, officials say.
The Mission Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at about 6:30 a.m. to the Francis McDonald residence on Mission Creek Lane, where a fire had apparently started in a pile of firewood had spread to the house.
The flames moved up the wall of the house and into the attic, damaging the roof structure and causing a bedroom ceiling to collapse, Fire Chief Ray Frey noted.
“It’s pretty extensive damage … it’d take a pretty good rehab to fix it,” Frey said.
Several people were at the house when .......

POLSON — A two-page agenda promised a long Polson City Commission meeting on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
Prior to the regular meeting, the commission held a public hearing on a proposal to wholly annex surrounded properties in Skyline additions 1 and 2.
Later in the meeting, the commissioners unanimously passed the motion to annex the Skyline additions.
The first item on the agenda was an offer by the city of Polson to trade lot 21 in the Hamilton tracts, assessed value $88,482, for William Ingraham’s half share of COS 4014 tract 2-A, assessed value approximately $35,535. Polson City Manager Todd Crossett was unable to attend the meeting so no update was available.
Shari Johnson, Polson City Engineer, presented a comparison of three sites for the headworks and sewer system. All the sites are located .......

Akela Armantrout, 4, gets some festive face art during the St. Ignatius Community Christmas Carnival Saturday afternoon.

ST. IGNATIUS — This year’s community Christmas carnival was bigger and better than ever, and it’s all thanks to the businesses that donated a wealth of prizes, said organizer Darren Orr of the St. Ignatius Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s kind of amazing how much (local businesses) donate,” Orr said.
The community event depends on donations, of both cash and prizes, to support the gift drawings that sent dozens of kids and adults home Saturday with prizes like iPods, gift certificates to local restaurants, toys, games and much more. Attendees signed up for the drawing at the door, and as the afternoon went on, name after name was called, bringing huge smiles to the winners’ faces.
“Seventy-five to 80 percent of the kids that showed up probably won a (drawing),” Orr said. “We just had a ton of stuff to give away this year.”
While the prize drawing was the center of attention for the adults, kids had.......
