Lady Bulldogs survive against Maidens, fall to Lady Vikings

ST. IGNATIUS — It wasn’t pretty, but the Lady Bulldogs will take it.
In a low-scoring, cold-shooting defensive-battle at St. Ignatius Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs were able to outlast the Ronan Maidens for a 24-15 victory.
“We were excited to get the W. Our kids were excited,” Mission coach Les Rice said. “We played hard. Defensively we played well. I’m pleased with our effort. We worked hard. We just didn’t capitalize on their mistakes.”
With both offenses struggling – the teams combined for 10-of-110 shooting from the field – Bulldog senior Katie McDonald shined. McDonald finished with a game-high 11 points, going 3-for-6 from 3-point range.
“That was the one bright spot,” Rice said of McDonald’s 3-point shooting. “That’s one thing we did well offensively.”
The Bulldogs played much better against the Lady Vikings in Charlo Friday, but couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 33-24 loss. The Lady Bulldogs let the Lady Vikings jump out to a 10-1 lead, before they hit their first field goal, a 3-pointer by McDonald with less than four minutes to play in the quarter. The Vikings scored the final six points in the quarter to take a 16-4 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter the Lady Bulldogs clamped down on defense and only allowed four points in the quarter. With baskets by Bella Dally and Adessa Durglo in the final two minutes the Lady Bulldogs were only down 20-12 at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs whittled the lead down to as low as six in the second half, but a 3-pointer by Kinley Pope around the six-minute mark in the fourth quarter pushed the Lady Vikings’ lead to 31-20 and put the game out of reach.
“That was it. That was too much for us to overcome,” Rice said.
The Lady Bulldogs only allowed four points in the fourth quarter, but with their 1-for-14 shooting from the field they couldn’t gain any ground.
The Lady Bulldogs were 10-of-40 from the field (25 percent) and went 5-for-12 at the foul line.
“I thought it was a well played game. We just need to shoot the ball better. Defensively, once we got rid of the first quarter, I thought we played well,” Rice said.
McDonald led the team with eight points and hit the Lady Bulldogs’ only 3-pointer in the game. The Lady Bulldogs went 1-for-6 behind the 3-point arc. McDonald accounted for three of the Lady Bulldogs’ eight assists in the game.
Durglo went 3-for-6 from the field for six points. She also had five rebounds and a team-high three steals. Rachel Jensen and Dally each finished with five points.
