“She has helped us so much,” SKC Prevention Program Director Niki Graham said. “She is the one people will call when they have a HIV/AIDS case because she is so compassionate.”
Clark works as a nurse for the Lake County Family Planning Clinic and the Public Health Home Visiting Program, which supports and educates at-risk pre-natal and post-partum mothers. Clark was honored publicly at the celebration and was presented ......

People’s Center powwow draws a crowd

The People’s Center in Pablo hosted a social powwow on Aug. 22. The powwow began at 5 p.m., and the dancers danced until dark on the lush green lawn.
Invited drums were Yamncut, Post Creek and Allen Pierre’s drum according to Marie Torosian, Education Director for The People’s Center.
“The powwow started off slow,” Torosian said, “But then it just picked up and we had dancers and drummers.”
Torosian said The People’s Center likes to host social powwows because it give younger dancers a chance to dance, and there is no waiting around for contests to be finished.

Paralyzed right arm doesn’t doesn't slow down racecar driver

Aaric Bryan/Valley Journal
John “Lefty” Hendrickx leans into the fourth turn as he comes around to take the checkered flag in the trophy dash at the Mission Valley Speedway on Aug. 1.

The first time John “Lefty” Hendrickx sat behind the wheel of his racecar he felt at home; winning the first race he entered just confirmed the feeling.
The victory last summer, where Hendrickx beat the rest of the field using just his left arm, not only signified the start of the 40-year-old’s racing career, it also signified the end of a long and arduous journey back from a motorcycle accident nearly 20 years earlier.
In 1990, while Hendrickx was riding his motorcycle a drunk driver in a van pulled out in front of him. Before Hendrickx could react, he had broadsided the van going faster than 50 mph. The accident left Hendrickx in a coma for a month and in intensive care for three months.

Make your Fourth of July a safe one

The 4th of July is one of America’s most celebrated holidays and fireworks are a part of the traditional celebration. However, they can also be part of tragedy if not used carefully.
Fire officials with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes caution that the Flathead Indian Reservation is experiencing very dry conditions. Fire danger is high and any unplanned human-caused fire has the potential to cause loss of life, property, and valuable natural resources.
Residents using fireworks surrounding the Fourth of July holiday should obey all federal, state, and city fireworks regulations and use extreme caution.
Be certain it is legal to use fireworks before you light them.
Here are some tips for a safe holiday:
• Where legal, use fireworks outdoors and in a safe area away from fields, grassy areas, and buildings.
• Keep a bucket of water, wet towel, and a garden hose nearby.

• Use fireworks in parking lots, driveways and gravel or dirt areas.
• Follow instructions carefully and use with close adult supervision.
• Let fireworks debris cool, then soak in water before disposing of debris.
For more information on making your holiday safe, contact the CS&KT Division of Fire at (406) 676-2550, ext. 6454.

DOE honors S&K Aerospace

S&K Aerospace (SKA) has been named the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Administration (SBA) 8(a)/Small Disadvantaged Business Contractor of the Year Award recipient for 2008.
This prestigious honor is given annually to a small business that demonstrates excellence in DOE’s SBA 8(a)/Small- Disadvantaged Business socio-economic programs or functional areas that directly contribute to core DOE mission accomplishments. The award is part of DOE’s Secretarial Small Business Awards Program and will be presented to SKA during the 10th Annual DOE Small Business Conference Aug. 11-14 in Long Beach, Calif.
In 2007, DOE awarded SKA the Technical Assistance Contract (TAC) for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project in Utah. In partnership with S&K Technologies and Pro2Serve, SKA offers services to support the safe removal of uranium mill tailings from the Moab site to a disposal cell near Crescent Junction, Utah.
The TAC team provides project integration, information technology and telecommunications, records management, training, safeguards and security, public affairs, and other support services for the project. The TAC team also operates the ground water remediation system.
The DOE Office of Environmental Management Moab Federal Project Director and TAC Contracting Officer Representative nominated SKA for this DOE Secretarial award. SKA was selected because of its creative solutions to meet DOE requirements and its extraordinary customer service and significant value to the government.
“This award is a great recognition of our performance on this contract, which is SKA’s first with DOE,” said Tony Amadeo, SKA vice president of midwest operations. “SKA would like to thank the employees of the TAC for their outstanding efforts, as well as the DOE staff and the other contractors working on the Moab Project, who together act as a singularly focused team.”
SKA is a certified SBA 8(a) company owned by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and is headquartered in northwest Montana. The company provides engineering, information technology, and logistical services to clients in the federal government and private sector.
