POLSON – The stabbing of a 17-year-old boy, reported to be in “fair” condition with no life-threatening injuries, is currently under investigation by the Polson Police Department.

According to Assistant Police Chief John Stevens, the boy was stabbed by another 17-year-old boy multiple times in the chest, arm and groin areas. He said the suspect, who was apprehended the same evening and transferred to a Missoula juvenile detention facility, wielded a folding, hunting-style knife larger than a pocketknife.

The names of both boys, since they are under age 18, are being withheld by the police department.

According to Stevens, officers were dispatched to a stabbing on the west side of town near Cherry Valley Elementary School at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, March 17.

An ambulance was called to the intersection of Ninth Avenue West and Second Street West, where the victim was located. After being transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, the boy was transferred by ambulance to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula, where he underwent surgery for the stab wounds.

Stevens commented that the boy seemed to be doing better on Sunday, March 18, and that he was able to speak to an investigating officer.

According to Stevens, the suspect is not believed to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and it is unknown whether the victim was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Medical records may be subpoenaed as officers work to reconstruct events from some reported “conflicting stories.”

The Polson Police Department is currently seeking more information about the incident. Witnesses are encouraged to call 883-7301 and speak with any officer or detective.

Stevens said the suspect stands to face an initial charge of aggravated assault, a felony, but depending upon the recommendation of the county attorney and the juvenile probation office, the charge could be changed.

A hearing to determine whether or not the suspect should be released to his parents’ custody or remain in juvenile detention was scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, March 19.
