News from the Polson Police Department

POLSON — Polson Police Department has teamed up with the Montana Trial Lawyers Association to help distribute multi-safety helmets to young kids in the local area. Local trial lawyer Ann Moderie contacted the Polson Police Department to help distribute the helmets to youth at no cost to families that need them.

In just one week, the police department has given out 17 helmets to kids that ride bikes, scooters and skateboards in the community.

“I have oftentimes seen our youth without head protection while using our skate park,” Polson Police Chief Wade Nash said. “Many, when I ask, say they don’t have one, so this program is a huge benefit to our youth who want to venture out (and) enjoy our recreation opportunities in our city parks.”

Too often trial lawyers have represented kids who were hit by cars and injured while riding their bikes, resulting in severe injuries to their brains; injuries that could have been prevented if the kids would have been wearing helmets, according to the Montana Trial Lawyers Association website. Because of this, the Association decided to provide helmets free of charge. Individuals and organizations can visit their website, www.monttla.com to donate funds toward purchasing helmets. Bell Sports, manufacturer of the helmets, gives special price breaks for the helmet program, according to the Association’s website.

“If a helmet protects just one kid from the tragedy of suffering a traumatic head injury, the program will be worth it,” the Association website reads.

The helmet program has been active 17 years in Montana, with 817 helmets given out this year and 13,500 helmets given out since the program started.
