POLSON — Kids ages 8 to 17 interested in flying should grab their parents and head to the Polson Airport on Saturday, June 11.
The Experimental Aircraft Association Lake County Chapter will be hosting its Young Eagles program, through which youngsters fly free with local licensed and insured pilots beginning at 9 a.m. weather permitting.
Pilots Mauri Morin, Carmine Mowbray, Chuck Jarecki, Bud Radtke, chair of Young Eagles, and Larry Ashcraft will provide flights for children.
The event starts at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. A suggested donation of $5 helps defray costs for the program.
Morin said he first flew when he was 6 years old. During the depression, a barnstormer popped into a field belonging to his father, a farmer in North Dakota. The barnstormer was offering airplane rides for $5. Morin and his dad got a free ride because it was their field. After that first flight, Morin was hooked. He began taking flying lessons when he was 18.
“That’s coming on 60 years, and I’ve flown on and off my whole life,” Morin noted.
In the hopes of hooking other youngsters on flying, Morin has been involved with the Young Eagles program for 10 years. Last year pilots flew 135 kids all across the valley, and this year, in addition to the Polson program they’ve planned a Young Eagles event in conjunction with Pioneer Days in Ronan and Good Old Days in St. Ignatius.
For youth truly interested in learning to fly, Young Eagles offers Sporty’s Complete Flight Training course online as well as scholarships for flight lessons.
