Editor,

A short time ago, on one of the major news channels, Vice President Joe Biden shouted vehemently, that America would go to “the gates of hell” to bring to justice those who are responsible for the beheading of innocent American citizens. I certainly hope that we bring them to justice. I’m not sure if the vice president was aware of the fact that he was quoting words used by Jesus Christ in Matthew 16:18, where he declares that “the gates of hell” will not overcome or prevent the building of His Church.

I have a suspicion that many people use the word “hell” in one way or another with very little thought or understanding of what they are talking about. Imagine hearing someone say that the weather is “hotter than hell” or that they would oppose something “until hell freezes over.”

The Bible is our only authoritative source of information regarding hell. Matthew 25:41 states that God has “prepared hell for the Devil and sinful angels” (demons?). In 2 Peter 2:4, it says that God did not spare the “angels that sinned, but sent them to hell.” That being the case, God certainly doesn’t want people to go there. After all, Jesus came to save us from the Devil and bad angels. Jesus speaks of hell in Matthew 5:22; 29, 30, as the consequence for our sinning, we have all done that, Romans 3:23.

Frankly, I don’t want to get near hell, not even the gates. I guess I’m like a lot of the folks here in the valley, committed to Jesus who holds the keys to death and hell, Revelation 1:18.
