Editor,
As a member of the Lake County Fairground board in Ronan and member of Friends of the Fairground, affectionately called FOG, I often get questions about what’s happening at the fairgrounds.
One common question is “Are the fairgrounds still moving to the property west of town?” The answer to that is completely wrapped up in economics. At this time there is no money to fund such a move. We are talking millions of dollars to build buildings, roads, water, sewer, power and phone with no grant money in sight. So that being said, the board decided that if we can’t move for now, we would just try to “grow where we’re planted.” If we can’t be bigger, we could at least try to be the cutest little fairground in the State.
The County was able to purchase some additional ground for a very reasonable price that gives us more parking. It also gives us some additional space to increase the use of the fairgrounds as a venue for a wider variety of events. We have a great arena with covered seating that can be used for other types of livestock or equine shows in addition to the fair itself. We have barns that instead of being empty most of the year can be used in a variety of ways year round. We are working on a project to insulate and finish the inside of the Horticulture barn so it can be used year round, like the Community Center, but will offer a smaller venue.
We are holding a FOG get together at the Community Center on Wednesday, Nov. 5 that is open to any one interested in the Fairgrounds. Come join us with your questions and ideas. Bring a snack to share, something to drink and your fun side. Whether you’re an ag person, business person or a town resident, increasing “traffic to town” will benefit the Mission Valley as a whole and a “darn cute little Fairground” can become a draw.
Hope to see you there.
