Editor,
“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” So said Thumper, and so say I.
Not too long ago, I was walking on the Polson bridge, carrying a political placard. When a pickup approached, the young male driver stared at me and then gave me the finger. I laughed it off with my friends, but it still stung. My crime? Voicing my opinion.
More recently, a nasty, negative letter was printed, denigrating an upstanding citizen of this community. His crime? Voicing his opinion.
Free speech is a good thing, but personal, disparaging put-downs are not. Words can hurt. Toxic words are equivalent to giving someone the “verbal finger.”
We have too much negativity in this world already; we don’t need more acid rain in the form of words falling on all of us.
I could debate every political point made by this writer, but I won’t. It would be like asking a Jihadist to consider the merits of Buddhism. Instead I will close by saying that I will always advocate for civility and I will always stand up for kindness.
And you go, Thumper.
