ST. IGNATIUS — The Lady Bulldogs chipped away at the Breakers Thursday night for the win on their home court, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23.

“I call it the curse of Loyola,” said head coach Kendal Anderson. “We always come close but never seem to beat Loyola.”

The Breakers boasted a couple of tall players, but Anderson said the key to her team’s victory was the fact they never lost sight of their goal.

“Loyola is a great hitting team,” Anderson said. “Their hitting was off tonight but so were we.”

Anderson said instead the team started tipping and placing serves, which threw off Loyola’s blocks and changed their defensive strategy.

Mission gave up an early lead in the third game after jumping ahead 8-2. The Breakers battled back, but the Lady Bulldogs eventually took the game.

“We need to stay up. We gave up some big leads,” Anderson said. “I’m very excited about our win.”

Mission was led in kills by Sara Nerby with nine. Loren Erickson added four blocks and three aces. Sydney Allard once again had a strong defensive game, digging up 28 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 111 digs.

On Oct. 11, the Lady Bulldogs also won another challenging match against the Arlee Scarlets.

After the battle of five games, the Lady Bulldogs eventually emerged from the dust, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-7.

In that game, Nerby again paced Mission with 20 kills. Ashley Courville had 23 digs and two blocks while Erickson and Sarah Bowers each had 22 assists. Becca Nelson led the Scarlets with 18 kills and Whitney Malatare added 24 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Charlo Lady Vikings Saturday at home.

Nerby once again provided the hitting power with 15 kills. Lewandowski and Courville both added 20 digs each.
