Ronan City Council has assigned a committee to look into one councilmember’s suggestion that the governing body adopt an ethics policy.

At the end of November, City Councilmember Roger Romero suggested the city adopt an ethics policy that would create ramifications for leaking information outside of executive session, which Romero believes has been a problem in the past. The council directed City Clerk Kaylene Melton to contact other city governments to see if other Montana councils have ethics policies.

“I got a few laughs, but no responses,” Melton said. “No one has such a thing.”

Romero said he has found where cities in other states have ethics policies, but nothing in Montana.

“I couldn’t find them in Montana but I did find them elsewhere,” Romero said.

Mayor Kim Aipperspach suggested turning the issue over to a smaller part of the council for more discussion.

“We should appoint a committee to decide what they want to do about it,” Aipperspach said.

He assigned the issue to the Public Improvement Planning Committee that consists of Cal Hardy, Robert McCrea and Chris Adler. One of the members might trade places with Romero, so that he can work with the committee on the issue without having to post notice of a full quorum of the council meeting.
