Editor,

No doubt about it, America is determined to build more powerful rockets and commodious capsules, enabling trained astronauts and wealthy citizens to exit planet earth and venture into the heavens to explore distant planets. Could it possibly be that this colossal expense of exploration is partly spurred on with man’s desire to know if there is someone out there? The testimony of the first Soviet cosmonauts after returning from their initial venture into space was, “We didn’t see God out there.” Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!” (John 14:9b).

There is a line in God’s good book which declares, “Christ (‘Messiah’ or ‘Anointed One’ as presented in Hebrew prophesy) Jesus (meaning ‘Savior’) came into the world to save sinners” (1st Timothy 1:15). The birth of Jesus in the cattle pen was not his origination; he was the Son of God before he became the son of Mary. He created everything and gave life to everything that was created (John 1:1-3 and 1:14). He who put this planet in place became the miracle baby of the virgin mother. “Christ came into the world.”

He came right into our world, to live a human life, to experience our temptations, to feel our pain and weaknesses and to die an awful death in order to show us the Father’s love. He came to save sinners. Sinners are rebels, rebelling against God’s compassionate love for them and his just laws to guide them. Scripture teaches us (Philippians 2:6-8) “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.” His incarnation and salvation are forever; and He saves forever all who accept him (John 1:12).
