Editor,
My husband and I experienced Christmas this summer, compliments of the weekly Community Supported Agriculture food baskets that were supplied by Jayna Brown, the daughter of Farmer Frank and Dana Brown from Ronan.
I had known the Brown family for quite some time, and when I discovered that their daughter was going to be providing weekly food baskets, I decided to sign up for the entire season, which spanned from June to October, even though I had planted two food production gardens myself. I cannot adequately express my appreciation for all the care and consideration that went into the creation of the food baskets every week.
Even though Jayna was the responsible party in this endeavor, she was assisted by her supportive siblings. Each week, I eagerly anticipated what surprises might be in store for me and my husband. There were always a dozen farm fresh eggs, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, fresh baked bread, rolls, bread sticks or pita bread, and something from the dessert or sweet category like cookies, scones, breads, cinnamon rolls, and for the final week, homemade apple pie with the most delectable crust ever. A majority of the basket contents were from the fresh fruit and vegetable categories. On two different occasions during the summer, we also were able to buy fresh poultry from the Browns, which I must say were delicious.
In addition to anticipation of enjoying the baskets, there was always the added benefit of spending time with the Browns and their very interesting, friendly, polite, accommodating and social children. My husband and I found ourselves spending a little extra time with the children, soaking up some very good feelings about the fact that we are grateful that they will be part of the future of America. When the week arrived when our last basket was due to be picked up, I felt a sense of sadness and loss. I must admit I shed a tear or two.
Fortunately, I will still be getting milk and eggs from the Browns and will patronize Jayna’s new restaurant in Ronan called Stella’s, so all is not lost. What more can I say but “thank you” to Jayna, the Browns, and their industrious children?
This was indeed a very special summer.
