ELMO — A torrential rainstorm on Saturday evening blew water onto the dance floor and flooded out the stick game pavilion at the 33rd Annual Standing Arrow Powwow.
The rain caused about an hour’s delay while powwow committee members and friends swept the water off the floor and then the festivities continued.
“You just can’t stop us,” Iris Caye said.
Wet blankets, sleeping bags and clothing hung on branches, tent frames and every available surface to dry on Sunday.
Thursday, July 14 was camper’s day and then the powwow officially began on July 15 and ran through July 17 with grand entries at 1 and 7 p.m. All ages — tiny tots through golden agers — danced and kept the drums busy. Dance contests paid three places. Tiny tot dancers received a $5 bill on Saturday, and on Sunday they scored a bag of candy.
Gabby Corral was emcee of the powwow, and Kenny Lozeau was arena director. Head man dancer was Wilbert Michel and head woman dancer was Susan Antiste.
Host drum was Chief Cliff Singers and co-host drum was Yamncut. The $4,000 first prize in the drum contest drew 10 drums plus other non-contest drums that came just to play.
Drum and dance contest results were not available at press time but were promised for next week’s edition.
