It was a tough week for the Chiefs and Maidens as the teams combined to drop four games.
The Chiefs were at home Friday as they hosted Polson for the second of their two rivalry matchups this season. Ronan jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead on the strength of a pair of threes by Marcus Hungerford and Kevin Wroblewski. Polson had a quick answer, though, using a 9-3 run that led to Louis Mohr tying the game at 11 on a jumper with 4:03 to play in the opening quarter.
Ronan sank a free throw to go up 12-11 but the Pirates countered with a 7-0 that helped Polson build a 20-15 lead after eight minutes of play.
Polson began to widen its lead in the second quarter as back-to-back threes by Vince DiGiallonardo and Sheldon Fisher pushed the lead to 26-17. The Pirates led by as many as 13 in the second frame but the Chiefs cut the lead to seven late in the half before Polson countered to take a 39-29 advantage into the break.
Ronan opened the third quarter with an 8-1 run and cut the Polson lead to 40-37 on a three by J.J. Tanner midway through the frame, but Polson again had the answer as the Pirates led 52-43 heading into the fourth quarter. Ronan had a hard time cutting into the gap in the final eight minutes as Polson held on to get a 69-59 win.
Hungerford and Wroblewski each scored 11 to lead the Chiefs in the loss. Wroblewski also added five rebounds. Tanner finished with 10 points and Brady Oakland added eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Chiefs suffered another loss at home Saturday as Ronan fell to visiting Libby, 43-38.
Libby led 11-8 after one quarter of play but the Chiefs were able to cut the lead to 16-15 at the half. Libby outscored the Chiefs by one in the third and used clutch free throw shooting to hold on down the stretch.
Justin Dustybull led the Chiefs in the loss with 13 points while Wroblewski added 11.
With the losses, the Chiefs fall to 0-6 in conference and 6-9 overall this season.
The Maidens remain winless on the season after suffering a pair of losses to Polson and Libby this week.
The Maidens were able to stay within 13 in the first half against Polson at home Friday but the Lady Pirates pulled away in the second half to earn a 49-14 victory.
Polson led 12-4 after eight minutes of play and took a 23-10 lead into the halftime break. The Lady Pirates dominated the second half, outscoring the Maidens 26-4 to pull away.
Tailyr Irvine led the Maidens with six points in the loss and added seven rebounds. Marissa McCrea, Courtney Clairmont, Alice VanGunten and Trinity Rosenbaum each scored two for Ronan while Clairmont added a team-high eight rebounds.
Jaime Gilden proved to be too much for the Maidens to handle Saturday as she scored 23 to lead Libby to a 51-29 victory.
Ronan trailed by only five after the opening quarter but the Lady Loggers used an 11-5 second-quarter run to build a 26-15 halftime advantage.
Libby continued to pull away in the second half en route to the win.
VanGunten led the Maidens with 12 points in the game while Irvine added eight points and nine rebounds.
With the losses, the Maidens fall to 0-6 in conference and 0-15 overall.
The season continues for the Maidens Thursday as they host Bigfork while the Chiefs host Frenchtown for Senior Night that evening. Both teams are at home Friday against Columbia Falls.
