SPOKANE — Siliye Pete was resting her voice Feb. 12, speaking in short quiet sentences, ahead of the next day when she was prepared to use all of the wind and noises inside her to make joyful sounds with the National Association for Music Education’s All-Northwest Choir in Spokane, Washington.
The junior alto was diagnosed with strep throat two days before she gathered to sing with 300 other students from across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming in the gala event, but the illness couldn’t quell Pete’s enthusiasm.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I just love to sing.”
Pete qualified for the competition by submitting an audition tape that included a number of voice exercises.
“Siliye is super talented,” Coach Rebecca Seago said. “She has really worked hard to get to this point. She keeps getting better each year.”
Seago said most of the students selected from Montana came from AA schools.
“There were only a couple from Class B schools,” Seago said.
Participation in the event puts Siliye into an elite group that includes past performer trumpeters Doc Severinson and jazz saxophonist Kenny G.
