Editor,

Early childhood education, being debated in the current Legislature, is certainly helpful in preparing students for higher levels of learning; however, education itself is not a guarantee of a successful lifetime career.

There is a very interesting line in God’s Book that often jolts my attention when I read it, “Love is greater than knowledge,” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (NLT). That line comes out of a series of lines teaching us God’s standard of healthy relationships. It goes so far as to state that if I “didn’t love others, I would be nothing.” That’s frightening.  We put so much emphasis on knowledge and so little emphasis on love.

The Holy Bible quotes Jesus, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength,” Mark 12:30-31. That pretty well covers everything; however, Jesus did not stop there, he said, “you must love your neighbor as yourself.” Everything about us — thoughts, words and actions — should express our love for God and for others, in that order. We will never be able to truly love our neighbor until first of all, we truly love God.

Our love for God is expressed by our love and devotion to God’s Son, Jesus Christ, “All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them and they live in God, as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the Day of Judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world,” 1 John 4:15, 17. Jesus said, “All who love me will do what I say,” John 14:23a, “anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me,” 24a. In another place he says, “anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand (without a foundation)” Matthew 7:26.

Education that disregards God’s instructions gradually leads us away from God.
