POLSON - It was a rough day for the Mission Valley Mariners Sunday as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to the defending state champion Missoula Mavericks via the 10-run rule.
The Mariners' pitching could do little to slow down the red-hot bats of the Mavericks as Missoula scored at least one run in all 11 innings played Sunday.
The Mavericks wasted no time grabbing a lead in the opening game as a walk, a stolen base and a single allowed Missoula to quickly go up 1-0.
The Mariners had an answer in the bottom of the inning, though, as a double by Chris Clary drove in Justin Evertz to tie the game at 1-1.
The Mavericks began to pull away in the second inning a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases with no outs. Mariners' pitcher Josh Rustad then hit Ben Roberts to drive in a run and Brody Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to push the the Missoula lead to 3-1. Another walk, a wild pitch and a single brought in three more runs as the Mavericks went up 6-1.
Mission Valley cut the deficit to four in the bottom of the second as Jacob Young singled and later scored on a single to left by Dalton Molzhon to leave the Mariners down 6-2.
Missoula added three more in the third to go up 9-2, but Mission Valley got one back in the bottom of the inning as Evertz belted a one-out double, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground ball by Clary.
All hopes of a Mariner comeback were dashed in the fourth inning as Missoula added seven more runs to grab a 16-3 advantage.
Mission Valley added one last run in the bottom of the fourth as Young picked up a one-out single and later scored from third as Molzhon got caught in a run-down at first.
Missoula went on to add two more runs in the top of the fifth as the Mavericks went on to win by 14.
Rustad took the loss for the Mariners while Nathan Jewett picked up the win for Missoula.
The Mariners struggled at the plate in the second game of the day, picking up just three hits as the Mavericks got another run-rule win, 11-0.
Jack Humphreys, Austin Von Tom and Clary picked up the hits for Mission Valley in the loss while Roberts was 3-3 with a home run and four RBI for the Mavericks.
Robbie Gauthier took the loss for the Mariners while Shawn McArthur got the win for Missoula.
The Mariners are at home for a doubleheader against the Glacier Twins Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
