Editor,
Last Sunday evening a nurse on duty at St. Luke hospital phoned. She informed me that my cousin (by marriage) was asking if I would come and pray for him because of the severity of pain he was experiencing; a neighbor had driven him to the hospital that morning. Hospital staff were preparing him for transport to a Missoula hospital when Joyce and I arrived 30 minutes after the call; his agony was acute even though the doctor had prescribed medication to reduce pain. We prayed that the Lord would remove the problem that was causing the pain, not knowing what the medical prognosis would be. Medical personnel in Missoula were unsuccessful in their attempts to correct his problem. Thirty-six hours after that phone call, my cousin passed from earth to heaven.
I’m reminded of the words a sister once spoke to Jesus when her brother passed from this life, “Jesus, if you had been here my brother would not have died,” John 11:21. Jesus told her, “your brother will rise again,” v.23. “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying,” v.25.
In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 15, he writes, “dear brothers and sisters of the Good News,” v.1, “Christ died for our sins,” v.3, “he was buried,” v.4, “and he was raised from the dead as the first of the resurrection,” v.20; “then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back,” v.23b; “everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life,” v.22. Paul concludes his thoughts about our resurrection, “thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ,” v.57.
That’s worth celebrating this Easter Sunday.
