Editor,
In March I received my monthly water bill and was quite surprised it was $146.52. It usually runs around $48.96 per month. I phoned the Pablo water company and informed them that there was some kind of error; my bill has never ran over $78 a month when I had five people residing in the home. They told me that I might have a leak. I stated to them that I know there is no leak in the house. She then stated to me that there might be one outside in the line that I don’t know of and that they can have a worker come over and check the meter again to see what the water use has been; she said they can also tell if there is a leak.
I said OK, let's have that checked.
So I decided to obtain a copy of the data on the water meter. This was shocking. According to the data sheet it stated I used 22,000 gallons, which was up 19,000 gallons from the previous month.
I called the water company back and said this is impossible to have used this amount of water in a month, for the past year I had used only 3,000 gallons and under. Math is math; there are several ways to come up with an equation. Either way you do it, it will come out the same. For me to have been guilty of using such an amount like they claimed I would have had to have all my faucets turned on all day and night and it still wouldn’t have come to this amount. They stated they had checked the meter and that it was correct, and also ruled that there was no leak. They also said that something significant must have taken place to cause the increase.
The only significant thing that took place was I took in a sick cat but now Hercules has been gone. Please, Hercules, come home.
