News from the Boy Scouts of America, Montana Council
FLATHEAD LAKE — Electricity has been restored to the Boy Scouts’ Camp Melita Island. In October, 2014, the power cable finally succumbed to many years of exposure. The cable stretched from the mainland, along the bottom of Flathead Lake, to the transformer near the Melita Island lodge. The cable had lasted well beyond its expected life span. When it shorted out, the island was left in the dark.
The Boy Scouts of America, Montana Council’s Executive Board, quickly voted to begin the process of replacing the cable. Program Director Peter Jones contacted many contractors and suppliers. He was able to negotiate a price well below the initial estimated cost.
Over the past several months, a group of dedicated volunteers and contractors have been working tirelessly to complete the project. Trenches were dug, rock was jack hammered, and 5,000 feet of cable and conduit pulled from the shore to the island.
The Boy Scouts are very happy that the power has been restored so summer campers can enjoy this beautiful island. A huge thank you to the contractors and volunteers who gave of their time, treasure and talents to complete this important task.
