Editor,
Giving kids the necessary complete education involves not only a good local school system but also community involvement outside the school’s front door. I believe one of the greatest challenges facing America today is the breakdown of something “outside the school’s front door”, and that is the family unit.
Added to this breakdown of the home environment is the ever-growing influences of provocative and enticing negative behavioral patterns being thrust at our kids daily through the forms of communication and entertainment. How do our kids make their choices? What and who are the greatest influences on our kids these days? We can certainly see, right around us, the great needs for our youth.
There are people and programs throughout the Mission Valley recognizing and working hard to address these needs. One of the newer ones is a 501-C-3 non-profit corporation, which I am involved with, called: “Onward and Upward, Inc.” Our present board: 3 women, 3 men, ages 28 to 84, an attorney, artist, webmaster, grant writer and all active locally.
O and U was formed specifically to help our youth and young adult population. One of our key programs, which we are presently developing, is called: “The Leadership Development Project.” This is a program of vocational planning and entrepreneurship for youth and young adults in Lake County. The purpose is to encourage the participants to develop a positive perspective and to open their eyes to the array of opportunities available, to recognize their self-worth and understand their many options, globally.
Today, in America, the needs for a societal shift toward empowering our younger generations is critical. We are seeing evidence of this being brought to the surface of awareness over and over again in many forms, many of which are violent in nature.
This is about adapting to present conditions and situations and providing full educational opportunities for our future leaders and those who support those leaders effectively through their education and understanding.
Misunderstandings and lack of education breeds chaos.
We have an opportunity right here. Step by careful step, together we can reach the summit of youthful self-confidence and self-esteem.
