Beginning May 31, the U.S. Postal Service will implement new postage rates, but General Domestic Priority Mail prices will remain the same. First class, one-ounce letters will also remain at 49 cents, but fees for each additional ounce will increase from .21 cents to .22 cents.
Metered first-class letters will increase one percent, from 48 cents to 48.5 cents and first-class postcards will increase from 34 cents to 35 cents. The largest percentage increase will be seen in first-class packages where a 5.1 percent increase will be applied across the board. Other increases include some services, international mail and first-class flats.
The Postal Regulatory Commission approved the rates May 7. Although scheduled to increase in late May, rate implementation was delayed by a dispute between the Postal Service and the regulators who objected to the way some rates were calculated. Some adjustments have been made to final rates since the proposed rates were first announced.
