Local track, field teams shine at Corvallis

The Gene Hughes Invitation in Corvallis was a meet of personal bests and broken high school records for many local teams.

The Charlo boys showed their talent and depth in their season debut by securing second place with 98.16 points behind host Corvallis, who took top honors with 125 points. Ronan-St. Ignatius tallied 55 points and placed fifth overall, while Arlee took ninth with 27.5 points.

The Corvallis girls topped the competition, coming in first with 132.5 team points, followed by Hamilton with 110.5 points and Charlo’s 99-point team effort. The Ronan Maidens placed sixth with 40.5 points, and the Arlee Scarlets were eighth with a combined 35.5 points.

CHARLO
Stephen Delaney swept the hurdles events, taking first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.09) and the 300-meter hurdles (40.24). Teammate Tra Ludeman clocked in at 15.72 to take second in the 110-meter hurdles, and Kail Pope was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Ludeman was also fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.95, and Tyler Delaney was fourth (54.9) in the 400-meter.

Charlo also placed well in the relays, finishing first in the 400-meter relay in 45.46 and second in the 1,600-meter relay, crossing the line at 3:41.0.

In field events, the Vikings walked away with a second-place finish (20-8.50) by Ludeman in the long jump and another second (42-4.50) from Webb O’Neill in the triple jump. O’Neill took the top spot in pole vault (12-6) and was in a six-way tie (5-6) for fifth in the high jump along with Stephen Delaney. Also placing in the pole vault was Jacen Petersen, who vaulted 11 feet for third.

The Lady Vikings also had a good showing in Corvallis, taking third place with 99 points behind Corvallis (132.5) and Hamilton (110.5).

Sienna Brown was sixth (13.86) in the 100-meter dash, and Deondra Brown was fourth (28.50) in the 200-meter event.

In the 400-meter run, Charlo’s Madison Foust was the winner, crossing the line at 1:07.59.

The Lady Vikings also had placers in the distance races, with Dawn Blevins taking fifth (6:06.80) in the 1,600-meter and a sixth-place (14:44.20) by Mackenzie Foust in the 3,200-meter.

Several Charlo girls also swept the hurdling events, with Aspen Runkel leading the way with a second (17.23) and fifth-place (55.61) finish in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Rachel Hoyt took fourth(18.08) in the 100 hurdles, followed by Jordan Ludeman in fifth (18.13). Ludeman also took third (52.83) in the 300 hurdles behind second-place finisher Hoyt (52.28).

The girls also placed second (53.07) in the 400-meter relay and third (4:30.9) in the 1,600-meter relay.

Blevins dominated the javelin event with a throw of 120 feet and 8 inches. Hoyt placed second (4-10) in a three-way tie in the high jump event as did Ludeman, tying with Hamilton’s Camie Westfall for a vault of 8 feet in the pole vault event. Charlo’s Derika Stipe also tied with Seeley Swan’s Shelby Holmes for fifth place in the pole vault.

The Vikings and Lady Vikings travel to Corvallis to compete against Darby-Florence April 3.

RONAN-ST. IGNATIUS
Ronan-St. Ignatius boys’ track and field team took fifth place in a field of 13 competitors and were led by the performances of Riley Dennis and Jalen Bell. Dennis was sixth in the 200-meter run (24.60), third in the 400-meter run (54.0) and was on the fifth-place 400-meter relay team (47.08) along with Carston Baertsch, Bell, and Jake Skelton.

Bell won the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 10 inches, and teammate Marcus Hungerford was sixth (5-6). Bell was also third in the long jump with a personal best of 20-08.25 and fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 40-10.5. Also competing in the triple jump was Patrick Eichert, with a personal best jump of 37-9.

In the throwing events, Lucas Gerhardt was third in the shot put (41-9), and Nikko Alexander was sixth (35-05).

Connor Benn and Shelby Grant tied for sixth in the pole vault (9-0).

In the distance events, Paden Alexander paced the team, placing fifth in the 3200-meter in 10:58 and sixth in the 1600-meter in 4:57.

On the girls side, Jade Gray placed in several events, including a third- place finish in the 1600-meter run with 6:04 and fourth in the 3,200-meter in 13:47.

Teammate Courtney Heath was right behind Gray and placed fifth in the 3,200-meter with 14:26. In the 800-meter run, Courtney Clairmont was third, finishing in 2:39.

In the hurdling events, Stephanie Lewandowski led the team with sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.24.

Field events were led by Aspen Jore’s fourth-place finish in the javelin (99-1), which also set a new Ronan High School record. The old record (92-9) was set in 2005 and held by Kelly McMillan.

Kaylie Durglo was fifth in the triple jump with a best jump of 30-10.5. Twyla Hogge also had a best throw in the shot put (32-9) event to garner her a fifth-place finish.

The Chiefs and Maidens host a meet April 3 and travel to Bigfork April 14.

ARLEE
The Warrior and Scarlets picked up a couple of high- place finishes at the Gene Hughes Invitational March 31 in Corvallis. In the 200-meter run, Arlee’s Brandon Hergett was fourth with a time of 24.39, seconds ahead of teammate Zach Carver, who was fifth at 24.50.

The Warriors were second in the 400-meter relay behind Charlo’s first-place finish of 45.46.

On the girls’ side, Arlee’s Jessica Knoll was fifth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:16.91.

In the shot put, Aspen Mindinger tied with Corvallis’ Jessica Lewis for third with a throw of 32-10. Mindinger was fourth in the discus event with a distance of 92-5, followed by teammate Becca Nelson’s throw of 90-5 for fifth.

Nelson was also second in the javelin (108-7), placing behind overall winner Charlo’s Dawn Blevin’s throw of 120-8.

In the jumping events, Whitney Malatare was fifth in the long jump (13-10.5) and sixth in the triple jump (30-7.75).

Arlee traveled to Ronan April 3 and goes to Hot Springs April 12.
