Editor,

As I went to pick up my son from football practice one day I saw an amazing thing. My son was later than normal, so I went to the field to see what was going on. I wasn’t sure whether I was seeing flashbacks of basic training or the Ronan version of “Remember the Titans.” Whatever it was I was seeing gave me a great deal of pride and faith in the coaching staff.

These coaches worked these athletes hard. I wasn’t sure what happened at first, but knew it was significant and the flashbacks of basic training were because of the mass punishments I remembered. I heard words like “respect,” “teamwork,” and “leadership,” and I heard one particular coach yell that some were not working as hard as others were.

Coaches: Kudos to you for enforcing the rules and creating a mentality of championship among the team; kudos for not putting up with the murmuring or disrespect or laziness.

Student athletes: Some of you probably had some unkind words about your coaches once you left the field, but know that that kind of enforcement of rules and behaviors is for the betterment of the entire team and it is what will build champions.

My son was not pleased that he had to be punished for what others were apparently doing. It seemed unfair and in fact, it probably is unfair. So, I challenge the team to do something about it by stepping up and using some peer pressure to stop the negative thinking, murmuring or whatever other problem that exists while you are on the field.

It occurred to me that the drug problem we have in our community is similar in that you, as student athletes, have the power to stop the madness and be leaders who stand up against some of the negative challenges in our community.

Parents, please support coaches and teachers in disciplinary measures that will make a positive contribution for tomorrow’s students.
