Editor,

What is it about high school reunions that keep drawing graduates back to the communities of their alma mater to reminisce about teenage days long since gone by? I’m pondering those thoughts today. It was only a couple of weekends ago that the Polson High School graduates of 1949, ‘50 and ‘51 gathered in Polson to reflect on “the good old days,” a line right out of God’s book, Psalm 77:5, NLT. I distinctly remember Coach Toby Nelson saying to me on graduation evening as I stood in line with my classmates to receive our teacher’s congratulations, “Well, Harv, you’ve just completed some of the best years of your life.” Those were good years. I thoroughly enjoy recalling them, especially with those people who shared those very exciting years of my life. Just seeing their faces once again stirred the exciting memories I have of Polson High; although it is becoming more difficult to connect names and faces even with nametags to assist us. Most of us don’t see quite as well as we used to and even our memories fail us at times. All of us are octogenarians. But we came, some with canes, some in wheelchairs, some using walkers, couples arm in arm assisting each other with steps and doors. Conversations were unusually loud as we leaned our heads together, endeavoring to catch every word.

There are not as many of our classmates anymore, perhaps nearly half have finished their course (2 Timothy 4:5-8) and departed this life. As I was reading my Bible this past week, I came across another line that made me aware once again about life itself. The line is in Psalm 37:25, NLT, “Once I was young, and now I am old.”

I think I have my answer. The Lord gives us “the good old days” to turn our hearts to trust and obey Him as we grow older.

Thanks to those special ladies who planned our 65th reunion.
