News from Mission Valley Physical Therapy

Falls are the leading cause of injuries for older Americans and threaten the independence and health of more than 100 senior adults in Montana every day. Six out of every 10 falls happen at home, where we spend much of our time and tend to move around without thinking about our safety.

However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through lifestyle adjustments, fall prevention programs and community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be significantly reduced.

Sept. 23, the first day of fall, marks the 8th annual National Falls Prevention Awareness Day, sponsored by the national Council on Aging (NCOA).

This year’s theme, Take a Stand to Prevent Falls, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population; many are working closely with occupational and physical therapy practitioners as key contributors to reducing falls.

Mission Valley Physical Therapy of Polson is offering free advice for community members to learn how to avoid falling accidents. Owner, Shannon Nunlist, PT, believes “It is important to educate those who are susceptible to losing their balance that falls can be prevented.” Physical Therapist Debbie McGuinness notes that there are simple adjustments we can all make to maintain our independence and stay “falls free.”

Shannon, Debbie and the MVPT staff invite you to stop by this month and learn about fall-proofing your home and measures you can take to prevent falls. Visitors will also receive a free nightlight.

Mission Valley Physical Therapy is located at 51657 US 93 in Polson, one-quarter mile north of the Highway 35 and US 93 intersection.
