Editor,

Recently I’ve been accused of “attacking” some  volleyball players by stating my opinion on my social media page, which has opened me up to criticism and ridicule. I am known to speak my mind, be up front, honest, and supportive of things I feel strongly about and often make statements to that effect. I’ve always stood up for what’s right, and point out what’s wrong.

The senior volleyball players are an incredible bunch. They are highly talented in both academics and athletics; they represent Charlo well. This volleyball season was anticipated with excitement. This season, they would be standing together hearing their names at the start of the games, celebrating the wins, and pulling together as team.

This year, however, the volleyball coach placed the ten seniors throughout all three teams, and placed freshman on the varsity team. It wouldn’t surprise me if the team was preselected before the season began. This plan was not communicated to players or parents ahead of time, nor was it presented in a positive fashion, but was presented as a “life’s not fair, so deal with it,” attitude. It left confusion and humiliation for the players not selected to be a varsity player. In Charlo, it’s been known that seniors are on varsity, period. Now they are sitting on the bench. I am openly questioning a coaching philosophy that would foster inequality, subservience, and favoritism.

As far as I see it, the girls who have invested their time and love for the sport for the past six years deserve more than the disrespect they’ve been shown by the person who is supposed to help them improve as players, and by the school which is supporting the coach. The season that should have been the best of their lives has now turned into one of the most disappointing. By separating them, causing dissention, and putting the focus on players who have three years left to gain and refine their skills, the seniors remain divided on the court.

A team divided is not a team at all.
