News from Polson Boxing Club

POLSON – For many years the VFW on Main Street was the home of amateur boxing in Polson, and now it is back. The VFW is donating the use of their meeting space to the newly formed Polson Boxing Club (full contact boxing).

This club has been designed to serve the public, not to make money. Boxers will not pay a monthly fee but will be required to join USA Boxing for insurance purposes.

This is not an exercise club nor is it a daycare. All members will be expected to show up on time, do their best, and encourage their teammates while training for competition. We will not tolerate lolly-gaggers, nor bullies, in or out of the training facility. The physical and emotional well-being of each member is paramount.

There is no longer an old age limit in amateur boxing. If you are 12-99 and are interested in participating, we look forward to seeing you. Those younger than 12 will be considered with full parent participation.

The Polson Boxing Club will be directed by Matt Lee. Lee boxed for the Missoula Mavericks Boxing Club during the 1980s and for two seasons for the Fort Riley Boxing Team, US Army. He is certified as an amateur boxing coach and as an official through USA Boxing.

“Boxing amplifies personal responsibility,” Lee said. “When the individual steps into the ring there are no teammates who can pick up the slack on an off day; the boxer stands alone. Those who choose to be stubbornly persistent and reject losses as failure will do well in this sport.”

Our insurance policy requires each boxer to become a member of USA Boxing before beginning practice. Membership requires a physical, birth certificate, an insurance fee of $68, and two wallet sized photos. This can be completed through (www.teamusa.org/USA-Boxing). All non-athlete participants will also be required to register through USA Boxing and complete a background check.

Everyone interested in participating in or donating to the Polson Boxing Club can contact Matt Lee at mattblee@aol.com or stop by the VFW, 423 Main Street, during an open house Oct. 28 and 29 at 5:30 p.m.  Practices are planned for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Polson VFW.
