Editor,
Surprise. The tribes won’t make in-lieu tax payments.
Kerr Dam had a tax bill of almost $1 million. With tribal ownership of the Salish Kootenai Dam (name change), the tax revenues will be lost to the state, Lake County and Polson school district (where tribal children attend school).
Did anyone honestly believe the tribe would continue paying the tax revenues on in-lieu tax payments? No matter what was said, promised or implied, the tribe had no intention of paying the tax revenues.
Anyone who believed otherwise was naive, gullible, or just didn’t want to face the harsh facts of reality.
Now that almost $1 million is wiped out from the tax base, who do you think is going to make up the lost tax revenue?
Be ready to open your wallets.
