News from American Legion Post No. 138
RONAN — American Legion Post No. 138 of Ronan recently sent Ronan High School senior Gennaro Berna to attend American Legion Boys State, where he toured the State Capital and met with Congressman Ryan Zinke and Governor Steve Bullock.
Boys State attendees held elections and tried to find a common goal to learn about leadership and how government functions. Gennaro ran for and was elected as City Mayor of Boys State, and wrote about his future plans in an essay about his experiences.
“I am determined to pursue a further education, whether it is in college or the military,” Berna wrote. “I am a firm believer that further education in whatever field you choose will help and guide you on your own path to success.”
Berna said his past experience at American Legion Boys State has helped shaped the man he is going to become one day, one who will show respect, pride, integrity, “and most importantly, honor,” he wrote.
Berna comes from a background of relatives that have served in the United States Navy, including his great-grandfather Ralph who served as a boiler technician during WW I. His grandfather Karl also served in the Navy for six years as an electrician’s mate during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Berna’s father James served in the Navy for 12 years as a boiler technician, a corrections specialist, and a gas turbine mechanical technician.
“I am proud to come from a family of United States Navy Veterans who proudly served and protected our country,” Berna wrote.
