RONAN — Hands waved in the air Wednesday as the pumped-up crowd sang a loud chorus of “Sweet Caroline,” directed by Coach Steve Woll in the Ronan Performing Arts Center.

Wait — who? That’s right, basketball coach and teacher Woll led the full auditorium in song as middle school students awaited the annual Lip Sync contest finals.

The fun event culminates a physical education segment that allows both artsy-types and athletes to create a dance routine to a popular song, then the top ten perform for the whole school.

Some of the performances were definitely a workout.

Peterson Watkins performed a break dance to “Hit the Quan” by I Heart Memphis, both flipping into the thin air and jumping over a large garbage can to thunderous cheers.

Others moved less but had their lips completely synced, as did “The Bandit” Brenden Daley, as he sat with his air guitar and mouthed “Rusty Cage,” by Johnny Cash.

Wearing cool-guy shades, The Three Muskateers Caleb Cheff, Lathan Savage and Trenton Burland danced and lip-synced to “Shut Up and Dance,” by Walk the Moon.

The grand finale was performed by After School Detention adults Kellie Jones, Charla Lake and Angele Popyk  and student Riley Lindquist — whose moves and backward clothing rivaled the MTV video version of “Jump” by Kriss Kross.

“We know how to have fun here at Ronan,” Woll said.
