Editor,
On March 17 I received a letter from the Tribal Health and Human Services Deferred Services program informing me that they would cover two visits for me to be seen by a rheumatologist, which would allow me to have two evaluations. If I was to need any procedures such as surgery or testing, a new request must be submitted to IHS.
The rheumatologist had recommended an echocardiogram. I contacted Contract Care and they stated I need a referral before it could be authorized. I asked Contract Care, why do I need a referral? Contract care stated that they did not know.
I contacted Deferred Service and Ana Whiting Sorrel, Assistant Director of Tribal Health, asked them why this had to be done. They stated because they are trying to utilize the HIS, which is Contract Care as much as possible. I can see utilizing what you got, but how does throwing me back to the wolves utilize anything at all?
Researched: there are many other Indian Tribes whom have Deferred Services in place. Once you are approved through Deferred Services you are approved to see that specialist for six months and any orders are authorized through Deferred Services. My next step would be to review our very own Tribal Health regulations and see if they are in violation.
Contract Health Services had already denied three referrals for me to see a rheumatologist to began with, and it’s not likely they will approve for me to have the echocardiogram ordered by the specialist. The assistant director stated that if Contract Care denies the referral it will go back to the Deferred Services and it will be covered.
Ironic. I feel for those in similar situations where it is life threatening.
Tribal Health likes to play Russian roulette with Indian lives.
