News from Lake County Area Disabled American Veterans

LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Area Disabled American Veterans organization need additional volunteer drivers to transport veterans to and from their doctor appointments in Missoula, Kalispell and Ft. Harrison.

Currently we have five volunteer drivers to handle all the requests for veterans’ transportation needs. There are usually no more than two drivers available for the driving chores each week, so sometimes they are required to drive five days in a row. This is because others are gone on vacations, spending time with family and friends or have other obligations. In emergency situations where both our vans are scheduled and we still have other riders, we call Thompson Falls, Kalispell, Bitterroot or Missoula DAV for assistance.

In 2014 the Lake County DAV van transported 727 veterans to and from their appointments. So far in 2015 we have transported 864, and 95 percent of our local veterans have only the DAV transportation to rely on to take them to their doctor appointments.

You do not need to be a veteran to be a driver.

Two DAV vans are used to drive veterans to appointments, but you must have a valid driver’s license and insurance on your personal vehicle. There is also the need for a VA physical and background check.

So, ladies and gentlemen (yes, ladies too), please help our veterans and join our volunteer drivers organization. Thank you for your anticipated assistance.

For more information, call the Ronan DAV local area coordinator Marrion Clairmont at 406-207-1496 or Jack Collins at 406-370-5460.
