Editor,
It is estimated that two-thirds of family caregivers become ill or die before their care receiver. The emotional and physical stress of the situation takes a huge toll on the wellbeing of the caregiver.
The Area VI Agency on Aging is offering “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a six-session class to empower family caregivers to thrive in this stressful situation, so they are able to continue their caregiving. The class will be offered in Polson again this winter. Providence St. Joseph is allowing us to use a meeting room. The six sessions will be on Thursdays from 10-11:30 a.m. The class dates are Jan. 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4, 11, 18.
There are a couple of ways we are trying to make this class accessible. The fee for the class is $50, however it is adjusted on a generous sliding scale according to income, and many people pay a small amount or nothing. Through the Montana Lifespan Respite Coalition, reimbursement for respite care costs is available for those who choose to pay someone to be with their loved one in order to attend the class.
I would have benefitted greatly from this class when I was caring for my dad at the end of his life. I’m happy to be leading these classes, and if you are a caregiver, whether the person lives with you or not, I hope you’ll consider attending. If you know a caregiver you might suggest this to them. You can call me at 1-800-266-4188 for more information or to sign up.
