Editor,
I am writing this letter to express my support for Dennis Hewitt’s letter that was printed in the Dec. 23 edition of the Journal, on the unleashed dog park in Polson. Dennis’s letter is very timely and to the point.
My little dog, a mini Schnauzer, and I, very much enjoy the park. It is a great credit to the entire valley. However, there is a serious problem with the unsecured areas at both ends of the park at the river’s edge, particularly at low river levels for a large part of the year.
I have also lost my little partner several times when he and other dogs found something interesting outside the fenced area, and decided to go exploring. There have been several times when he decided to take off on his own outside the fence. We have found him several miles down the back road, up behind the high school, and several other places. Fortunately, he has been chipped and name collared. We have always had the great help and understanding of the good people who called us and we able to retrieve him safe and sound.
However, it would be tragic if we were unable to find him. It would break his heart, and ours, if we lost him to who knows what. Therefore, we strongly support Mr. Hewitt’s recommendation to extend the fenced area to the low water edge, and do not believe it would do any harm or damage to anyone or anything.
We very much appreciate Dennis’s letter to, hopefully, start actions to address this shortfall for all dog lovers. We also appreciate the opportunity to provide our views on this very important matter.
