The Polson City Commissioners, City Manager and Department Heads recently met for a day-long workshop conducted by the MSU Local Government Center in an effort to begin formulating a Strategic Plan for the City of Polson. Since becoming Polson’s Mayor in January 2014, this is something that has been on our radar to develop, and something that I have felt is important for our city.
Although this first meeting was just the beginning of what will be a fluid, ever-changing document to help guide the direction of the City, my hope is that this will offer our citizens and community an insight into the current and future identified challenges and projects. It allows us all to be more effective in planning and preparing for some of these larger projects as we can see them coming on the horizon.
But this Strategic Plan is not only for the future, the first order of business at the workshop was to begin formulating our Mission Statement, our Vision Statement and our Core Values. As a citizen of Polson, I expect our City to operate in a way that reflects the values of our community. I was quite pleased and proud of the City staff and Commissioners for the direction that was begun. Words like integrity, customer service, and financial responsibility were resonating around the room as we worked on this portion of the project.
Prior to our regular City Commission meeting at 6 p.m. on March 21, the facilitators of our workshop will be presenting a summary of the work we did. Once again, this is just the beginning. We hope more members of the public will take an interest in this piece of what we are doing at the City, and become involved in the process. If you are interested in hearing more about it, please join us at City Hall on March 21.
Our next City Commission meeting is going to be heavily focused on planning. In addition to the report on our Strategic Planning Session, we will also be holding the first City Commission Public Hearing for the proposed Development Code update. This document will provide the guidelines for future development within our town. We will begin the public hearing at 7 p.m. and we welcome input on this important information. The draft Code can be found on the City of Polson website (cityofpolson.com).
The process for the Development Code approval will be as follows:
—March 21, 7 p.m., City Commission Public Hearing #1. City Commission will discuss and consider first reading of ordinance to adopt Polson Development Code.
—April 4, 7 p.m., City Commission will discuss and consider the second reading of ordinance to adopt the Polson Development Code.
We look forward to continuing to look ahead for the City of Polson. Please feel free to share any thoughts or ideas you have with me by emailing mayor@cityofpolson.com or calling 406-212-0489.
