Editor,

Carmine Mowbray brought thoughtful comments to the recent resort tax public hearing that I was unable to attend. I do have some reflections:

1 – The City of Polson management of this resort tax seems to be a non-issue. Somebody has to do it, right?  Who else could do better?

2 – Her observation of non-tribal versus tribal participation bears comment. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes — bottom line — is obliged to take care of its own. Much of this effort has affected the common good in highway safety, water quality, and job creation. Please consider what the rest of us can bring to the table as far as contributing to our community’s well being.

3 – Finally, if I understand this correctly, the resort tax intention is to not only provide 15 percent property tax relief, but also support key elements of Polson that would bring more people to this community. If that’s the case, increased tourism would certainly help businesses, owned by out-of-city residents or otherwise. “Snow birds,” accounting for the increased demand April through September, own property here as well. I thought the original premise was to bring an equitable share of responsibility for services offered all year round.

At this point, I believe the resort tax is a good idea to improve the community in which we have chosen to live.
